What is StormSmarts?

StormSmarts is a program focused ​on severe weather awareness and ​education.

Severe weather is always a threat to ​the community and one we see ​almost year-round in West ​Tennessee. By educating everyone ​young and old about severe weather ​and how to stay safe during events, ​we can work to create a safer and ​more prepared community.

In 2023 Across the United States....

353 days (97%) had a probability of thunderstorms.

271 days (74%) had a probability of severe weather.

74 days (20%) had a maximum category of Enhanced.

There were 69 consecutive days with a Slight Risk from Jun 8 to Aug 16.

hail

Most reports of 2+ inch hail during ​summer on record. Largest being 5.9 ​Inches in Sanger, Texas

tornadoes

2nd highest number of March tornadoes ​since 1950. 2023 had 208 March ​tornadoes.

flooding

79 fatalities due to flooding. The leading ​state being California and Pennsylvania ​with 10. The leading activity that led to ​over 50% of fatalities was driving.

What do we offer?

Our primary goal is educating everyone about severe weather and safety. So far, ​this has consisted of online graphics and infographics, and plenty of classroom ​visits from our own meteorologists.
